This condition, often developing silently over many years, can lead to severe health complications, including heart attacks and heart failure. Understanding CAD, its underlying causes, symptoms, and the array of available cardiac interventions is crucial for both patients and healthcare professionals in managing and mitigating its impact.

Understanding Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

CAD is primarily characterized by **atherosclerosis**, a process where plaque—a buildup of fats, cholesterol, and other substances—accumulates within the inner walls of the coronary arteries [1]. This plaque hardens and narrows the arteries, restricting the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. When the heart muscle does not receive sufficient blood, it can lead to various symptoms and complications.

Causes and Risk Factors

The development of atherosclerosis and, consequently, CAD, is influenced by a combination of controllable and uncontrollable risk factors [1].

**Controllable Risk Factors:** These factors can often be modified through lifestyle changes or medical interventions. They include **smoking and tobacco use**, which damage blood vessels and accelerate atherosclerosis; **high blood pressure (hypertension)**, which stiffens and hardens arteries; and **high cholesterol (dyslipidemia)**, where elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol contribute to plaque formation, and insufficient high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol can be detrimental. **Diabetes mellitus**, both Type 1 and Type 2, significantly increases CAD risk, often in conjunction with obesity and high blood pressure. **Obesity**, particularly abdominal fat, is linked to higher blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes risk. Symptoms of CAD

Symptoms of CAD often manifest when the heart muscle is deprived of adequate oxygenated blood. Initially, these symptoms may be subtle or only occur during physical exertion. However, as the disease progresses and coronary arteries continue to narrow, they can become more frequent and severe [1]. The most common symptom is **angina**, or chest pain, which can be described as a squeezing, pressure, heaviness, tightness, or pain in the chest. This discomfort may radiate to the shoulder, arm, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen and can be triggered by physical activity or strong emotions. Other key symptoms include **shortness of breath (dyspnea)**, a feeling of being unable to catch one's breath, especially during exertion, and **fatigue**, an unusual tiredness that arises when the heart struggles to pump enough blood to meet the body's demands. A complete blockage of a coronary artery can lead to a **heart attack**, characterized by intense chest pain, pain radiating to other body parts, cold sweats, nausea, lightheadedness, and severe shortness of breath. It is important to note that symptoms can be atypical in certain populations, such as women, the elderly, and individuals with diabetes.

Cardiac Interventions: Restoring Blood Flow and Function

When lifestyle modifications and medications are insufficient to manage CAD, various cardiac interventions are employed to restore blood flow to the heart and improve cardiac function. These procedures range from minimally invasive techniques to open-heart surgery [2].

Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (PCI)

PCI, often referred to as coronary angioplasty, is a minimally invasive procedure designed to open blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. It typically involves several techniques:
