What Is a Double-J Ureteral Stent? A Patient Guide

Many patients hear the term "double J stent" for the first time right before a urology procedure, and it can raise a lot of questions. In simple terms, a double-J ureteral stent is a thin, flexible tube placed inside the ureter — the passage connecting the kidney to the bladder — to help urine drain normally while the urinary tract heals or recovers from an obstruction.

What Does a Double-J Stent Look Like and Why the Name?

The stent gets its name from the curled shape at each end, which resembles the letter "J." One curl sits in the renal pelvis (inside the kidney), and the other curl sits in the bladder, with the straight middle portion spanning the length of the ureter. These curls are designed to help keep the stent from migrating out of position.

Many modern ureteral stents, including hydrophilic designs, are made with materials that soften once they reach body temperature. This is intended to reduce friction against the ureteral wall and may help lessen irritation during the time the stent remains in place.

Why Do Physicians Place a Double-J Stent?

Physicians typically place a ureteral stent to keep the ureter open and support urine flow from the kidney to the bladder. Common reasons include:

  • After stone treatment — such as ureteroscopy, to support healing and drainage while the ureter recovers from stone fragmentation or a procedure.
  • Ureteral obstruction — from a stone, stricture, or external compression, to bypass a blockage.
  • After certain surgical procedures — on the kidney, ureter, or nearby structures, to protect healing tissue.
  • Hydronephrosis management — to relieve pressure caused by a blocked or swollen kidney collecting system.

How Is a Double-J Stent Placed?

Stent placement is typically performed by a urologist, often using a cystoscope guided by fluoroscopic imaging, and is frequently done in conjunction with another procedure such as ureteroscopy. The physician selects a stent length and diameter (measured in French, or "Fr") appropriate to the individual patient's ureteral anatomy.

Any severe pain, fever, or inability to urinate should be reported to a physician promptly, as these can indicate complications requiring evaluation. All procedures and implanted devices carry risks, and a physician can advise on what is expected versus concerning for a specific patient.
