Stroke & Neurovascular Conditions
A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain stops — from a blocked artery (ischemic) or a bleed (hemorrhagic). Brain cells die within minutes, so recognizing symptoms and reaching a stroke center immediately determines how much function can be saved.
Overview
Ischemic strokes, the majority, occur when a clot blocks a brain artery — often traveling from the heart or carotid artery. Hemorrhagic strokes come from ruptured vessels, including brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations. Modern neurovascular care transformed outcomes: clot-dissolving drugs and mechanical thrombectomy can reopen blocked arteries within hours, and minimally invasive coiling, stenting, and flow diversion can seal aneurysms before or after rupture. How It Is Diagnosed

Treatment Options
Intravenous thrombolysis

Mechanical thrombectomy
For large-vessel occlusions, a stent retriever or aspiration catheter navigated from the groin or wrist physically removes the clot, dramatically improving outcomes in eligible patients.
Aneurysm coiling, stenting, and flow diversion
Detachable coils fill the aneurysm sac, sometimes supported by stents; flow-diverting stents reconstruct the parent artery so the aneurysm clots off — all through endovascular access.

Carotid surgery or stenting treats narrowed neck arteries that seed strokes, alongside anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation, blood-pressure control, statins, and smoking cessation.

Use the FAST test: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty — Time to call an ambulance. Even if symptoms resolve (a transient ischemic attack), same-day assessment is critical: a TIA is a stroke warning.
