Hernia & Hernia Surgery
A hernia is a weakness or opening in the abdominal wall that lets tissue — often part of the intestine — push through, creating a visible bulge. Hernias do not heal on their own; surgery is the only definitive treatment, and most repairs today are reinforced with a surgical mesh.
概要
A hernia forms where the muscle layers of the abdominal wall are congenitally weak or have been stretched by strain, surgery, pregnancy, or age. The most common types are inguinal (groin) hernias, umbilical hernias around the navel, hiatal hernias at the diaphragm, and incisional hernias at previous surgical scars. The bulge often appears when standing, coughing, or lifting and may disappear when lying down. Because the opening tends to enlarge over time, the main risks are incarceration — tissue becoming trapped — and strangulation, where the blood supply is cut off, which is a surgical emergency.
徴候と症状
- A visible bulge in the groin, navel, or at a previous incision that appears with standing or straining
- Aching, burning, or dragging discomfort at the bulge, worse at the end of the day or after lifting
- A feeling of pressure or weakness in the abdominal wall
- With hiatal hernia: heartburn, regurgitation, or difficulty swallowing
- Sudden severe pain, a firm tender bulge, nausea, or vomiting — possible strangulation, seek emergency care
診断方法
Most hernias are diagnosed by physical examination — the physician feels the defect while you stand and cough. Ultrasound is used for smaller or unclear cases, and CT is preferred for incisional or rare hernia types and for surgical planning. Hiatal hernias are typically identified during endoscopy or with a barium swallow study.
治療の選択肢
Watchful waiting
Small, symptom-free inguinal hernias in some adults can be monitored, but most enlarge over time and eventually need repair. Trusses relieve symptoms only temporarily and do not treat the defect.
Open hernia repair with mesh
Through a single incision, the surgeon returns the tissue and closes the defect, reinforcing the wall with a surgical mesh. Mesh repair markedly lowers the chance of the hernia coming back compared with suture-only repair, which is why it is the standard for most adults.
Laparoscopic (keyhole) repair
The defect is repaired from inside the abdomen through a few small incisions, with mesh placed against the abdominal wall. Recovery is usually faster and post-operative pain lower, particularly for repairs on both sides or recurrent hernias.
Mesh options
Meshes differ in material and behavior: non-absorbable polypropylene meshes provide permanent reinforcement, while partially absorbable designs leave less foreign material behind after healing. INVAMED’s Clever mesh family covers both approaches; the surgeon selects the type and fixation based on the hernia and the patient.
受診の目安
See a physician promptly for any new bulge, and urgently if a hernia becomes hard, very painful, or cannot be pushed back — especially with nausea or vomiting. Strangulation can cut off blood supply within hours and requires emergency surgery.

よくある質問
Can a hernia heal without surgery?+
No. The opening in the abdominal wall cannot close by itself. Small hernias can sometimes be monitored, but surgery is the only definitive treatment.
How long is recovery after hernia surgery?+
Most people return to desk work within one to two weeks after mesh repair, and to unrestricted activity in about four to six weeks. Laparoscopic repair usually shortens this timeline. Your surgeon’s guidance always takes priority.
Is hernia mesh safe?+
Surgical meshes have been used for decades and significantly reduce hernia recurrence. As with any implant, complications are possible but uncommon; discuss the mesh type your surgeon plans to use and its trade-offs.
What happens if a hernia is left untreated?+
It typically enlarges, discomfort increases, and the risk of incarceration or strangulation grows. A strangulated hernia is a life-threatening emergency.
